The history of ultrasound – from sound echoes to a revolution in medicine The history of ultrasound dating back to the early 20th century, when scientists began researching ultrasound waves – sounds with a frequency that is inaudible to humans. Initially, this technology was used by the military to locate submarines (SONAR), but as early as the 1940s, Austrian neurologist Karl Dussik made the first attempts to use ultrasound in medicine. The real breakthrough came in 1958, when Scottish gynaecologist Ian Donald, together with engineer Tom Brown, designed the first practical ultrasound device for diagnostic examinations. This enabled doctors to "look inside" the body for the first time without surgical intervention. Over the years, ultrasound examination has evolved from simple one-dimensional devices (A-mode) to modern 3D and 4D devices with Doppler blood flow analysis.
